High Tech -- Human Touch
In the 1968 science fiction classic “2001: A Space Odyssey,” a spaceship’s computer system known as HAL, a Heuristic ALgorithmic computer, manifests both the potential and the menace that artificial intelligence (AI) could pose. A half century later, while AI is still in its technological infancy, most of the high technology depicted as pure fantasy in the epic film is now part of our day-today reality. Moreover, the rate of technology’s integration into virtually every aspect of human existence is only accelerating. Two of the most promising new frontiers for that integration? Healthcare and higher education.
